(I already know I want this…so sign me up!)
A WAIT-LOSS Program that will give you a contented smile AND a good nights sleep right now!
Guaranteed.
- Are you constantly transferring your to–do list (TDL) from one day to the other because you are not getting those things done?
- Can you recite your TDL in your sleep because you have spent so many sleepless nights beating yourself up for not “getting things done?”
- Are you embarrassed to let the world know what you are NOT DOING?
- Do you say “I should just…” at least once a day?
- Are there things you want to do that you are not allowing yourself to do because you haven’t EARNED the right or time to do them?
Believe me, I understand all of these. I have been struggling for years to get a handle on my to-do list, seeming to never see the end.
Short and simple, I have been making to-do lists for as long as I can remember. I had always thought that the “list” was there to keep me focused, on track, and getting my life “done.” (Exactly, what does “getting life done” mean anyway?)
But, soon I realized that my list was not working. But why? I was being so diligent. ARGGGG!
I discovered that it wasn’t working for several reasons. (Are you ready? Are you sitting down? )
I wasn’t actually DOING what my TO DO LIST told me to do. OHHHHHHHHHH. Doing things. Oh, I get it!
So, I began to ask myself why?
Over several years of experimenting with systems, working on uncovering and changing my limiting beliefs, and comparing the items that I actually did and with those that I kept putting off, I learned a few things.
- I did not have the same level of juice for each item on my list. Some things I wanted to do and others I NEVER wanted to do.
- I tended to do the things I liked (duh!).
- There were a lot of “should dos” that were on my list that I really did not need to do.
- I was afraid of the amount of work and/or discomfort I would have to suffer doing some of the things on my list. In other words, I worked really hard to avoid doing something I did not like.
- I often underestimated or overestimated how much time it would take.
- And there were many more.
But the most important discovery that I made was that by not getting things done (for a myriad of reasons) was preventing myself from living the life that I wanted. Even though I was not doing the items I was devoting (or wasting) a lot of time avoiding and worrying about them. In other words, there was a significant cost to my well-being by not doing what needed to be done, holding on to old “shoulds” and denying myself the time to find the pleasure in my life because I had not earned the time to do what I loved.

So, what’s the secret to getting things done and finding peace as you eliminate things from your list and plug your energy drains?
This is a huge question that people have been asking for eons. There are thousands of books and articles on behavior change and motivation. There are equally as many organization techniques and systems and time management tools. All of them are great, in their own way.
But what gets us moving from reading a book about getting things done to actually getting them done? What makes us stop waiting to act?
For me, I’ve found that there are 4 crucial things that I often need to get things done.
Timing: The to-do has to have merit and be of value to me. Also must have juice for it RIGHT NOW. If it is not there, then no amount of flogging, berating or rewarding is going to get me to act. So, the timing has got to be right.
For example, I had a blog 5 years ago…before they were as popular as they are now. But I never really did anything with it. I didn’t have the juice and I couldn’t see the benefits at the time. It was on my TDL but I simply didn’t do it. Boy, what a relief when I finally took it off of my list and moved on to things that were more timely to me.
Support: There are massive amounts of evidence that most of us do better with support. Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs prove that. Weight Watcher, Exercise Clubs, etc all are built on the premise that we tackle the hard stuff better when we have support and do not feel alone. This support can come in a variety of ways but it’s my belief and experience that when we feel supported (and shall I say accountable) we do far better than when we feel isolated and can slip under the public radar. Support is crucial.
Planning: We really suck at estimating how long things should take, how much things should cost and how easy or difficult tasks are. Client after client has come to me with a TDL a mile long and an erroneous belief that they should be able to mark things off in no time. Yea, tell that to a seed in your garden “Just grow already!” No, some things take time, certain conditions, and most often a quasi-logical order. Without a realistic vision of what is possible and some logical planning things simply will not get done.
A monetary investment: Yes, that often means writing a check. This is not always true but often times we “feel” we need to pay so that we will do. I don’t really know the science behind this (if there is any) but I do know from my personal experience and the experience of my clients that “paying” literally and/or metaphorically can be the difference between getting some things done or having them hang over your head. So yes, writing a check and making an investment that pinches just a bit, is necessary.
Cheri, what kinds of things are you talking about?”
There are all sorts of things that are on our TDLs that are keeping us stuck. There are equally as many items that may never make our literal list but are reserved for our mental “some day” list that we keep in our mind. Here are just a few examples. Do any of these sound familiar?
|
Things that may be draining you because they are not getting done! |
Things that could uplift you, if you only found the time. |
|
Clutter: in your home, your office, your garage, your purse, your attic, your basement, your MIND! |
Is there a book in you that is dying to get out? Do you have empty journals that keep calling you to them but you aren’t finding the time? |
|
Finances: Reconciliation of accounts, Taxes, Bill payment, creating a functional system |
What about that artist in you that has long gone unacknowledged. Do you want time to express yourself creatively? |
|
Hiring Help: Do you need some assistance and/or support? Do you need to find the time to figure out what kind of help you need? |
You love nature but only time you seem to get outside is walking to your car. Do you crave time under the trees, taking a walk and looking at the stars? |
|
Business Development: Do you have a website? A GOOD website? What about a marketing plan, a good logo, a blog. Where do you want to be in 1, 3 or 5 years? Is it time to expand or downsize? |
When was the last time you REALLY spent time with your family? Are the kids growing before your eyes? Are you parents getting older and you crave to connect with them more often. |
|
Health: Do you exercise? When was the last time you had a physical? How is your eating? Do you need a plan for taking care of yourself better? |
Self Care: When was the last time you had a massage, a play date, a nap in the hammock? What about a mani or pedi, a trip to the spa or a few hours in a book store. Seen any good movies lately? |
|
Follow-Up: OMG, there are so many people that you need to connect with…clients, potential clients, friends, family, etc. |
Do you have fantasies about new things you could learn? Do you want to learn the art of baking bread, throwing pottery or lace making? What about fly fishing, gourmet cooking or stain glass? |
|
Social Networking: Are you plugged into Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc. It’s on your list but do you find time to do it? |
You say you love to travel but where have you been lately? There are wonderful places that are calling to you to come and spent some time exploring. What would happen if you listened?
|
Don’t you think you deserve this kind of happiness?
Wouldn’t it be great to really make 2012 your year?
method=”post”>So here’s my System:
A. I help you determine your timing. What is your energy level around your TDL? And I know there are things we have to do even if we don’t want to, but I help you find energy even for the crappy things you hate. It’s all in the timing and how you frame it…and I teach you how to see your TDL as doable. BTW, I also help you cut the fat and get rid of things that you really don’t need to do but you think you do. Whew, what a relief when you can simply take them off.
B. My program provides support in a variety of ways; from me as your coach, champion, and TDL culler, to your colleagues and fellow participants. We will engage in lively classes, support open-telephone calls and you can have the option to add some one on one coaching with me. You will be supported in making the changes you need to lose the WAIT.
C. I walk you through making a plan; an honest-to-goodness, realistic plan that you will WANT TO IMPLEMENT. No longer will you have nebulous, way-too-grand, pie in the sky objectives. You will replace them with juicy, realistic, meaningful to-dos that will actually get you where you want to go.
D. Lastly, you will have to pay for this program. Yep, you will write a check. You will get amazing value, no doubt. But you will also be making a big COMMITMENT; to yourself, to me as your coach, to your fellow participants. You will be making a commitment to play full tilt, work through your “stuff”, squelch the whining and work the program. It will be a big investment of time, mental and physical energy, and yes…money. You will reap amazing benefits. I guarantee it…or your money back!
