Breaking Out of Your Velvet Rut

Transform fear into action concept

“Nothing happens until you decide.”

Why do we procrastinate?  Why do we continuously put things off and stay snug as a bug in a rug in our comfy Velvet Rut?  (Your Velvet Rut is that place of inaction that you tell yourself is comfortable but it really holds you back.)

Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago has identified that there are 3 different kinds of procrastinators, each with a different motivation.

He said there are the Thrill Seekers, those who love the adrenaline rush they get by waiting to the last minute.  It’s a sort of high that they crave.

Then there are the Avoiders who are largely motivated by fear.  They may fear success or failure but regardless fear keeps them chasing other squirrels and NOT taking the action that needs to be taken.

Lastly there are the Decisional Procrastinators.  They struggle simply to make a decision.  What they are really avoiding is taking responsibility for the outcomes.  So to avoid making the wrong decision they make no decision at all.

So which one are you?

If it’s no clear to you, ask yourself the questions below and see what comes up for you.

  1. Are you habitually late for everything? Do people in your life EXPECT that you will be coming in tardy?  Have you ever been told you might be late to your own funeral?
  2. Are you worried about having to live up to others expectations if you succeed?  What do you feel when you think about failing at something?  Do you judge yourself harshly?
  3. How are you at making decisions?  Do menus overwhelm you (pancakes or waffles) or does the thought of having to choose a new car have you going to bed and pulling the covers over your head?

Once you know what you do to stop yourself from moving forward it is time to create plan to make a major change.
