What Are You Avoiding?

avoidance

“Pain in this life is not avoidable, but the pain we create avoiding pain is avoidable” R.D. Laing.

A while back I received a card from a former coach of mine.  She congratulated me on some exciting things that were happening in my business. Her card referred to a time in one of our sessions when she asked me why I thought so many things were falling into place.  It seemed to me it was because I had been willing to do some hard things I’d been avoiding.

I said, “Whenever I do something hard and scary, something BIG always happens.”

There it was . . . my truth . . . right there in black and white staring me in the face.

And you know what? This is a universal truth for me. I could fill pages full of examples I’ve witnessed—first hand and from others—where doing something frightening, difficult or uncomfortable brought in riches. Not only financial rewards but also things like a new opportunity, or meeting the “perfect” person to help solve a problem or receiving a new piece of business. For me, sometimes it’s simply been that my time expanded and I was able to accomplish far more than my norm.

This, of course, makes complete sense to those who have witnessed the power of feng shui. Simply moving things in one’s environment can allow the energy, or chi, to move differently . . . with terrific results. Sometimes to find money I simply need to clean out a drawer.  Clearing out things makes room for new things.  Kinda cool!

Same thing happens when we shake things up mentally. We get stuck when we have the big scary list of things that we put off. It’s often not as obvious to us but we are truly “stuck in the mud.”

So what are you avoiding? What are you scared of doing?

For many of us it could be taking an honest look at our finances or having a difficult conversation with a colleague. Perhaps it’s letting go of a client who isn’t perfect for us. It could even be tackling the clutter that is overtaking our office or home. It could be venturing out of our offices and into opportunities to meet new people.

Here’s my challenge and my promise to you. Make yourself a cup a tea, sit down in a comfy chair with a pen and paper and make a list of those scary things that you are avoiding. You know what they are. Now’s the time to bring them out of the closet.

Then decide which ones you are ready to deal with . . . and get busy.

My promise is this:  1) it will not be nearly as difficult or as scary as your mind would have you believe it is;  2) something amazing WILL happen as a result; and 3) if you’re truly brave and deal with the things on your list that scare you the most you will attract the greatest rewards.

A fitness coach once said to me regarding exercise and weight lifting: “It’s only hard until it’s not.” I say to you, it’s only scary until it’s not.

I’d love to read your comments below on this idea.  Write and tell me the riches that come your way because you have done the hard or scary stuff.
